3rd Place — Invited Architecture Competition

Our proposal Patchwork Residence for a new rental apartment building at Juhkentali 48 in Tallinn. The site is located opposite Tallinn’s central bus station — a dynamic urban gateway where infrastructure, movement and everyday city life intersect.

The project is based on the idea of patchwork — a composition where distinct elements are brought together into a coherent whole. Patchwork Residence is conceived as a layered assembly of materials, spaces and functions, where differences are not hidden but carefully articulated and connected.

Rather than a uniform residential block, the building is expressed through a rhythmic façade that combines warm earth tones, varied textures and subtle shifts in depth. This approach creates a lively yet balanced street presence, responding to the intensity of the surrounding urban environment while maintaining a sense of calm and clarity.

At the center of the block, a green courtyard forms the hidden heart of the project. The space is structured as a series of “patches” — areas for rest, study, play and shared community life — offering residents a quieter and more intimate environment within the dense urban setting.

The proposal explores how contemporary rental housing can contribute to the quality of the city, transforming a movement-driven location into a place with identity, atmosphere and a strong sense of belonging.
